In a tragic turn of events, Johnny Gaudreau who represented Team USA in the World Championships, and his brother Matthew Gaudreau were involved in a bicycling accident on Thursday, August 29, 2024, in the night, a day before when their sister Katie’s marriage was scheduled. According to the police, Johnny Gaudreau who was the star of the Columbus Blue Jackets was bicycling in New Jersey along with his brother, when they were hit by a vehicle in Oldmans Township which is 80 kilometers away from Trenton.

It is not known whether they were taken to the hospital for treatment or were pronounced dead at the scene. In addition, the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident have not been explained by the police. However, it is reported that the vehicle hit Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Gaudreau in Oldmans Township was being driven under the influence of alcohol by a 43-year-old man named Sean Higgins.

The suspect has been arrested and charged with hitting the bicycles from behind and trying to pass two other vehicles in a drunken state by the New Jersey State Police. Reportedly, the suspect admitted to drinking five to six bottles of beer before the accident happened. Sean Higgins will appear in court on September 5, 2024. The local media outlets have reported that Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Gaudreau traveled to New Jersey to attend their sister’s wedding on Friday, August 30, 2024.
As per the reports, Katie Gaudreau was preparing to tie the knot to her fiance Devin Joyce on Friday, August 30, 2024, at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church located in Gloucester City, New Jersey. Before the accident, the two brothers of Katie Gaudreau also attended a small event of their sister’s marriage.
The next day they were supposed to attend their sister’s marriage with their wives. Unfortunately, the NHL star and his brother lost their lives just one day before their sister’s big day when she would start the new chapter of her life. But heartbroken Katie had no choice but to cancel her wedding after the tragic killing of her brothers.

The grieving Gaudreau family issued a heartfelt statement following the tragic demise of Johnny and Matthew, “Last night we lost two husbands, two fathers, two sons, two brothers, two sons and brothers-in-law, two nephews, two cousins, two family members, two teammates, two friends, but truly two amazing humans.” Katie and the guests were scheduled to fly to Philadelphia by 7:30 PM on Thursday, August 29 for the marriage ceremony on Friday, August 30.
The accident reportedly happened at 8:19 PM on Thursday. At the time of their passing, Johnny was only 31, and Matthew was only 29. Johnny was married to his wife Meredith and he has two children Noa and Johnny while Matthew was married to his wife Madeline.
