Debra Jo was born on February 24, 1951, in Glendale, California, to her parents, Margaret A. Williams Rupp and John E. Rupp Jr.
She grew up with her siblings, Robin Lee Rupp and Rebecca Louise Rupp, in Boxford, Massachusetts.
She attended Masconomet Regional High School and graduated in 1969.
Debra left her hometown in 1979 and moved to New York to pursue an acting career.
Her earlier acting gigs were small stage performances and commercials before she landed a television role as Sheila, a dancer on the soap opera “All My Children.“
She also performed extensively in theater during her earlier years, one of her first theater works being Sharon Tipsword’s one-act comedy “Second Verse.”
Despite her theatre successes, her television career took off in the late 1990s with her role in the long-running FOX comedy series “That ’70s Show.“
Her performance as Kitty Forman, the over-protective mother of Laurie and Eric (played by Lisa Robin Kelly and Topher Grace), made her a household name.
She has also played other memorable television characters, such as Phoebe’s sister-in-law, Alice, in “Friends“; Jerry’s booking agent, Katie, in “Seinfeld“; and more recently, Beth and Randall’s social worker, Linda, in “This is Us“; and Abby’s mother, Janice Phillips, in “The Ranch.”
